How to avoid paying for roaming abroad

Imagine a situation: you fly to Thailand or the UAE, turn on your phone to notify your loved ones of your arrival or call a taxi, and a few days later receive a substantial mobile bill. Many travelers face a similar problem if they do not prepare for the trip in advance. Fortunately, today it is possible to stay in touch abroad without serious expenses.

To avoid overpaying for roaming, it is sufficient to choose a suitable connection method in advance and change several settings on the smartphone. In some cases, it is more profitable to use an eSIM, while in others, it is better to buy a local SIM card or connect a special package from your operator. Let's see how to prepare your phone for a trip and avoid unexpected expenses.

Why is roaming so expensive?

After crossing the border, the phone is connected to the foreign operator's network. The home operator pays for the use of this network and then includes the costs in the subscriber's account. Therefore, the cost of mobile internet, calls, and SMS abroad is often significantly higher than usual. The total amount depends on the country, tariff, and operator's terms.

Expenses may occur even when the phone's owner barely uses it. Some apps continue to run in the background, sync data, and automatically download updates. Social networks can play videos, while cloud services can store photos and documents. All these actions consume data unnoticed by the user.

Method No. 1: eSIM for instant connection

If your smartphone supports eSIM (virtual SIM card) technology, this method is the most convenient and technologically advanced. You no longer need to look for a physical plastic card, waste time replacing it, or risk losing your primary card. You simply visit the websites or applications of international providers, select the destination country, and purchase an internet data package. Before purchasing a virtual package, it is important to ensure that your smartphone's hardware supports this technology. The presence of a module can be verified using a simple service command that displays a unique chip identifier on the screen.

Instructions for verifying and activating the digital card:

     Checking device compatibility. Type the standard code *#06# on your phone's keyboard and check the appearing list of parameters for the presence of a row with the title EID;

     Choose an international provider. Install an official international eSIM provider (for example, Airalo, Nomad, Holafly, Yesim Keepgo) on your phone;

     Tariff selection and payment. Select the target country or entire region in the catalog, specify the required volume of the internet package (usually available variants from 1 to 20 gigabytes), and make the payment;

     Installing the communication profile. Follow the app prompts to automatically install the profile or scan the QR code sent to your email via cellular settings.

It is recommended to install the profile one day before departure while using a stable home internet connection. The communication package itself is activated only when the phone is registered with the foreign partner's network at the destination. After installing the eSIM, note in the cellular settings: for the "Data Transfer" section, only the eSIM must be used, and for the "Main Number," your home SIM card (for SMS). Disable the "Cellular Data Switching" function; otherwise, if the eSIM signal is weak, the phone will automatically switch to the expensive roaming of the home operator.

Method No. 2: Local SIM card upon arrival

If a trip lasting more than two weeks is planned, a local SIM card is the most economical solution. Foreign operators offer domestic tariffs where the cost of mobile internet is significantly lower than in international roaming. In addition, the subscriber receives a local number that will be useful for registration in services, connection to public Wi-Fi networks, and communication with hotels.

Selection criteria and regulations for local communication:

       Selection of a sales point. Ignore unofficial stalls in arrival zones and tourist centers, go to the signature retail stores of major telecommunications operators;

       Document preparation. Prepare the original foreign passport in advance, as in most countries, registering mobile numbers without an identity card is prohibited;

       Checking the distribution function. Verify with the consultant the terms for providing tethering services (the ability to use your smartphone as a Wi-Fi access point for other devices);

       Final connection testing. Ask the employee to install the card, wait for the network signal to appear, check the internet speed, and ensure the balance complies with the contract terms.

Buying communication directly in the city helps save a significant amount, as special packages with a 30-50% markup are often sold at airports. If you need internet not only on your phone but also on a tablet or laptop, be sure to ask the salon employee to activate the card in your presence and ask: "Is tethering allowed?" (Is internet distribution allowed?). Some low-cost carriers block the ability to create Wi-Fi access points for other devices.

Method No. 3: Special packages from Uzbek operators

If you are flying on a short business trip or weekend tour for 2-3 days, buying a local card or fussing with an eSIM may simply be lazy. In this case, it makes sense to look at the offers of domestic operators (Beeline, Ucell, Mobiuz, Uztelecom). Companies have special internet packages and minutes for travelers, which are activated for a specific period. The cost of such services has now become quite competitive compared to previous years.

Main rule. Connect these packages strictly before crossing the border of Uzbekistan via the operator's official app or via the USSD command. If you attempt to activate the package after arrival, your phone may catch standard, extremely expensive roaming and debit money from your balance within the first seconds of authorization on the network.

Upon arrival, your phone will simply start consuming the already prepaid megabytes from the purchased package. This is an ideal option for those who value staying on their usual number for incoming calls.

Method No. 4: Wi-Fi and other alternatives

If you need the internet occasionally, you can use free Wi-Fi points. Today, wireless networks are available in almost every hotel, cafe, large museum, and even in public transport in developed tourist cities. You only need to connect to the available points on time during city walks to update information. This method allows you to completely exclude communication costs from your vacation budget.

What recommendations should be followed when connecting to free Wi-Fi points:

       Prohibition of financial transactions. Do not log into mobile banking or enter passwords for important accounts when connected to public Wi-Fi without VPN enabled;

       Adjust system parameters. In the wireless network settings of your smartphone, disable the option to automatically connect to detected open points;

       Forget about regular calls. Classic cellular communication in roaming is expensive. For calls, use Telegram, WhatsApp, or FaceTime. Voice calling via messenger over Wi-Fi is completely free.

After completing the session in a public place, enter the list of saved networks and forcefully delete this access point from your phone's memory. This will prevent accidental reconnection when you just walk past this building in the future. To send confidential information or work with work documents, it is safer to wait until you return to the hotel or activate local cellular service limits.

Final checklist

Preparing your smartphone for a trip takes only a few minutes, but it helps avoid unnecessary expenses and allows you to use the connection calmly immediately after arrival. Before you go, make sure your phone is ready to work without expensive roaming and that all important data is available even without an internet connection.

Before you go, take a few simple steps:

     Disable data transmission in roaming on the main SIM card so that your smartphone does not automatically connect to mobile internet after crossing the border;

     Set your primary mobile data source. If you are using an eSIM or local SIM card, pre-assign it for data transfer and disable automatic switching between SIM cards;

     Download everything you need in advance. Download offline maps of the desired region (MAPS.ME, Organic Maps, or Google Maps), language packages for translators, electronic tickets, reservation confirmations, and other important documents to use them without internet access;

     Limit background data usage. Check your smartphone settings and ensure that app stores, cloud services, and automatic updates are not using mobile internet;

     Check the operation of offline features. Before leaving home, turn on airplane mode and ensure that maps, documents, and translator can be opened without an internet connection.

After such preparation, you can calmly turn on your phone immediately after arrival and not worry about unexpected communication charges. All necessary services will be ready for operation, and mobile internet costs will remain under control.
